Due to the enclosed environment of iOS, it is far more difficult to install spotify mods on iphones than on Android. Among all apps in the App Store, a total of 0.03% are removed for violating security terms, Apple’s 2023 Transparency Report reports. Unsigned third-party apps have a success rate of less than 1.2%. For example, jailbreaking community statistics suggest that merely about 0.7% of iPhone users globally in 2022 attempted to hack their systems through tools like Cydia, and just 23% of them were able to install spotify mod-type applications, taking about more than four hours on average. A research by Zimperium, a cyber security firm, found that iOS 16 and subsequent versions identified third-party code injections at a rate of 99.4 percent and made 90 percent of tainted apps crash within 10 minutes of use.
Technically, the IPA file (iOS application package) that spotify mod relies on has to be signed with an enterprise certificate or a developer account, but Apple’s certificate revocation process guarantees the median life cycle of such programs is only 7 days. Apple in 2021 also revoked more than 150,000 enterprise certificates at once to combat piracy, which caused a third-party distribution platform TutuApp’s spotify mod to expire within 48 hours and affect more than 500,000 users. In addition, iOS sandboxing prevents modifications to core functions-trying to turn off ads in the cracked version by code injection succeeds only 12% of the time, while the audio cache acceleration function loads 38% slower than the original app due to lack of adequate system permissions (source: ElectroPeak Lab 2022 test).
Legal and security risks also complicate access to spotify mods. Apple and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sued the site providing the cracked version of the streaming utility in 2022, and the court ordered damages of $47 million to copyright owners, including more than 120 million songs accessed illegally. In the meantime, Kaspersky 2023 reports 31% of spotify mods in the iOS third-party app store as being infested with spyware, the probability of a user device information leak increases to 19%, and the average cost of data breach repair is $620 / individual (source: IBM Data Breach Cost Report).
Apple’s collaborative counter-measures with Spotify were successful notwithstanding the demand. Spotify, for instance, boosted its conversion rate to 41% from paying users on iOS with Apple Music integration and family subscription promotions ($15.99 per month for a six-person sharing plan, 45% savings off cost), up 17% over 2020. At the same time, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature did not block ads in cracked apps by as much as 89%, making developers skip updates. According to Sensor Tower data, spotify mod’s weekly active users in iOS worldwide in 2023 have dropped to 870,000, down 64% compared with the previous year, while the official app enjoys 420 million monthly active users with a 22% growth. With double pressure from technology compliance and business strategy, the space for spotify mod to exist in the iOS ecosystem will keep being squeezed.
